Just make sure that your fountain has an anti-microbial coat to avoid the growth of molds and algae. It is also wise to use distilled water instead of tap water to make sure that there are no added minerals that could clog the valves.
Caring for Outdoor Fountains
Outdoor fountains, on the other hand, may be a nightmare to maintain and clean. Because a lot of things like dust, leaves and mud, can fall into outdoor fountains, you can easily have clogged or dirty outdoor fountains in no time. Your first line of defense would be to use skimmers and filters that would help you keep the small debris and residue out of the water or the reservoirs.
If your waterfall fountains have plants in it, make sure to pull out the dead leaves. Also, contrary to what is widely believed, it is not needed to have the fountain dried out and refilled with clean water, as long as you keep it clean. You can, however, add water to maintain the water level.
General Cleaning Tips for Waterfall Fountains
    1. Maintain water levels up to protect your water pump. This will make sure that your pump will not burn out. Your best bet would be to add a little amount of water daily.

    2. Clean your waterfall fountains periodically to keep out algae and prevent the build up of mineral deposits. To prevent algae from growing, you will need to use bleach, mouthwash, vinegar, or lemon juice if you do not have a commercial algae remover.
    3. Clean the bowl, the reservoir and the pump with detergent, warm water and a used toothbrush. Disassemble the pump according to the manufacturer’s instructions and soak the pump parts with vinegar. Remember that pumps used in hard water areas may need to be cleaned more often than those in soft water areas.
Take time out to clean waterfall fountains, be it outdoor fountains or indoor fountains. This will make sure that your fountain will last for a very long time, looking clean and well functioning!
